Guess the mystery animal, plant, fungus or stone
WildGuessr is a free animal guessing game in your browser, a bit like an animal quiz where you ask the questions, and it covers plants, fungi, stones, prehistoric life and space too. It comes from the maker of PriceGuessr and picks a secret subject from more than 600, from the house cat and the oak to the fly agaric, quartz, the woolly mammoth and Saturn. You ask about it one clue at a time, or recognise it from a photo, and try to name it in as few questions as you can.
How it works
Get a free clue
Every game starts with one true fact about the mystery, so you have something to go on.
Ask your questions
Is it a mammal? A tree? Does it have gills? Is it a hard mineral? Did it live in the Jurassic? Does it have rings? Each question gets a plain yes or no.
Name it
You have three name guesses. Then the answer is revealed with its photo, two facts and similar entries.
Ways to play
Daily challenge
One mystery for everybody, with one attempt a day: an animal, a plant, a fungus, a stone, a prehistoric creature or a space object, as a clue board and as a photo quiz. You can share your result as squares that never give the answer away.
Photo quiz
Recognise it from a photo instead of clues, like a classic species identification test. Asking about a trait still helps, for points. It is in practice and as its own daily.
Expedition
A solo run with 100 health. Each mystery costs health according to how many clues you needed, they get harder and every fifth is a boss. Pick animals, plants, fungi, stones, prehistoric life, space or all of them mixed. Practice has three difficulties and no limits.
Race with friends
Create a lobby, send the six-character code and race up to ten people on the same animal. Whoever solves it sooner earns more points.
Ranked duels
One against one, five animals with 90 seconds each, for a rating and leagues up to King of the Wild.
Fair scoring
A solved mystery is worth up to 1,000 points. Fewer clues always means more points; nothing is simply right or wrong.
Each clue you ask multiplies the points by 0.93 and each wrong name by 0.6; the free clue costs nothing. Three clues are worth about 804 points, ten clues about 484, five clues and one wrong name about 417.
An unsolved game still earns up to 150 points for the share of your questions that hit.
Real data, credited
I picked everything by hand and curated each trait from field guides and textbooks, cross-checked with Wikidata: diet, size and habitats of animals, leaves and flowers of plants, the cap and gills of fungi, the hardness and crystal system of stones, the period and fossils of prehistoric creatures, the distance and discovery of space objects.
Classification, names in eight languages and conservation status come from Wikidata (CC0). Photos come from Wikimedia Commons, with the author and licence shown under each one. Fungi and plants carry no advice on eating or foraging; the result only warns about poisonous ones.
Frequently asked questions
What is WildGuessr?
WildGuessr, also written Wild Guessr or Wild Guesser, is a free browser game in which you guess a mystery animal, plant, fungus, stone, prehistoric creature or space object. You ask yes-or-no questions about its group, habitat, shape or other traits, or recognise it from a photo, then name it. It comes from the maker of PriceGuessr.
How does scoring work?
A solved mystery is worth up to 1,000 points, and every clue or wrong name takes some of that away. Three clues leave about 804 points, ten clues about 484. Even an unsolved game earns up to 150.
Is it free, and do I need an account?
It is free and you can start playing straight away as an anonymous player. Sign in with Discord or Google to keep your progress and collection across devices; it is the same account PriceGuessr uses.
What can I guess?
More than 600 animals, plants, fungi, stones, prehistoric creatures and space objects, from the ones everybody knows to ones for experts. Practice has three difficulties: easy, medium and hard, and you choose the kingdom.
How does the daily challenge work?
Everybody gets the same mystery each day and has one attempt, as a clue board or as a photo quiz, each with its own subject. It resets at midnight Prague time. You can share your result as squares that do not reveal the answer, and see today's ranking once you have finished.
Can I play with friends?
Yes. Create a lobby, send the six-character code and race up to ten people on the same animal; whoever solves it sooner earns more points. Ranked duels are one against one, and the game also runs as an Activity in Discord voice channels.
Where do the facts come from?
I curated the traits from field guides and textbooks and cross-checked them with Wikidata. Classification, names and conservation status come from Wikidata, and the photos from Wikimedia Commons with each author credited.
Can I recognise things from a photo?
Yes. The photo quiz shows a photo from the start and you name what is on it, like a classic species identification test. It is in practice and as a second daily challenge.
Can I use it to identify mushrooms or plants to eat?
No. It is a game, not a field guide. Never eat a wild mushroom or plant because of it; if you are unsure, ask a mushroom advisor or a poison centre. The result warns about poisonous ones, but that is not a reason to pick any.
Do I keep what I guessed?
Yes. Everything you solve goes into your collection, with a tab for animals, plants, fungi, stones, prehistoric life and space, and after each game you see two facts and some similar entries.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, it is designed for phones first, and you can install it to your home screen.
Which languages are available?
English, Czech, Slovak, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Spanish and French, including the names. The game follows your browser language and you can switch it in the settings.
