WildGuessr

For schools

WildGuessr is a free game for biology lessons. Pupils work out a mystery animal from its traits, or recognise it from a photo, live on their own phones, tablets or Chromebooks while the teacher projects the game. No ads, nothing to install, eight languages.

A lesson in three steps

  1. Open a class and project this screen.
  2. Pupils scan the QR code with a phone or Chromebook and pick a nickname.
  3. Everybody guesses the same mystery by asking about its traits. You start each round and see the results afterwards.

Any device with a current web browser works. Pupils join by scanning the QR code or typing the class code.

Two ways to play

  • Guess by traits: pupils ask about class, order, family, diet, size, activity, habitat, continent and conservation status, and reason their way to the species.
  • Photo quiz: everyone sees the animal's photo and types its name, like a classic species identification test. A trait can still be asked as a hint, for points.

Fits your curriculum

  • Animals, plants, fungi and stones: choose what the lesson is about, for biology and geology alike.
  • Your own sets: pick the exact animals your textbook or curriculum lists, reuse them, and share them with colleagues by link.
  • Ready-made sets for common lessons (pets and farm animals, forest animals, birds, trees, flowers, crops, continents and habitats): add one to your sets and adjust it.
  • Share the class link straight to Google Classroom or Microsoft Teams, or copy it.
  • Local wildlife: limit a class to animals observed in the wild in your country.
  • Results for the teacher: per pupil, per animal and per trait, with the traits the class missed most, exportable as CSV.
  • Animal names, facts and the whole game in English, Czech, Slovak, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Spanish and French.

Accessibility

  • Designed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA: works with a keyboard and screen readers, visible focus, large touch targets, and status is never shown by colour alone.
  • A large-text switch and full screen for the projector; light and dark mode.
  • Animations stop when the device asks for reduced motion.

Pupils' privacy

  • Pupils need no account, no e-mail address and no real name: they type a nickname, and the teacher can rename or remove it.
  • What is stored for a pupil: a random anonymous identifier (kept in the browser and on our server), the nickname, and their answers and points in the class.
  • There is no chat and no messaging: pupils cannot contact each other or anyone else through the game.
  • Class games appear on no public profile, leaderboard or collection; what the class sees of the ranking is up to the teacher.

Teachers

  • Teachers sign in with Google or Discord, so their classes and sets stay with their account; we receive the e-mail address and name that the provider shares.
  • A teacher sees only the nicknames and results of their own classes.

Data

  • Data is stored in the EU (Supabase, Frankfurt). The website is delivered by Vercel.
  • A class with all its nicknames, answers and results is deleted automatically 90 days after it was opened; the teacher can delete it at any time.
  • Class pages run no analytics. Elsewhere the site uses Vercel Web Analytics, which sets no cookies.
  • During a photo quiz the photo passes through our server, so its address cannot give the answer away; after the reveal, photos load from Wikimedia Commons with their author and licence.
  • No advertising, no selling or sharing of data, no tracking for marketing.
